Back On Ground

As the saying goes " what goes up must come down," and here I sit back in my cozy room ready to get work done.
I thought of some ideas of where I want to have my main photo shoot, Markham Park. I know its basic, but I'm thinking of adding a clothing rack in the midst of a field of daisies and some funky hats and there I got my funky photo shoot. Since I just got back from California, I think I still have the images of mountains and ocean in my mind, so I wanted to incorporate that but still add my own twist. If nature sticks, then the nature images will stick in the minds of my readers.

Since I don't live in a daisy populated area, this image depicts how close I will get to a daisy field.

I'm definitely thinking something along these lines, a little more daring though. Hopefully by the end of spring break i will find the time to at least get some photos!

Mid-Air Thoughts

Here I am on my flight back home, and I realize the ticking time and my needing to get work done. I can't help but get my head stuck in the clouds, caught in the California dream. But California, for what I know as a beautiful mess of nature but others know it as the place to chase dreams. And much relating to California, are movies! Currently on the flight, I'm watching ' Back To The Future' and it really brings me back to the good times. It also brings me back to my magazine.
Watching the film, reminds me of that retro feel that I am aiming for in my film.

The film captures the retro vibe as well as it aims to be something greater, different in its time. Definitely adding this film to my mood board, and hopefully soon I can actually get started!

Grabbing inspo on a trip

As I am on my trip in California, I took a break from the overwhelming end of the qaurter work which allowed my mind to delve into the creativity and imagination. California is known for its big city full of stars but I have gotten to see another side . The city of angels it may really be, driving along the coast and seeing surfers enjoying the perfect windy day, the beautiful architecture that fills the hills in Malibu, the Santa Monica pier and all the lights that fill the sky at night. All this new scenery has really opened my eyes to another side of the world, it also made me realize how much I care about nature rather the city and glamour, which brings me back to my magazine. I want my magazine to not be so glamorous or artificial persay, but rather natural and retro like the surfers and skateboarders that literally live on the edge.
Also on this trip I have given myself space mentally to enjoy the little things, which I can bring back to my magazine that details are very important and I need to remember to focus on thos little things.
See ya on the flip side, xoxo.

Meeting Isabella

I think its time we meet my model and main subject for my two-page spread, Isabella Michelini! She is one of my good friends and is also interested in following a career in fashion design, which is is why I thought it perfect that she be in my magazine. I was thinking that the two-page spread can be about her wanting to be a fashion designer and etc.

Here are some pictures from her Instagram, as we can see she has colorful hair ( that changes weekly I swear) but I think that her having this colorful hair fits perfectly with my theme of empowering people to be different.
That's all for now, xoxo.

Critics

We recently got in groups to talk about our ideas for for our final product, and I got good feedback. I told them my whole idea for how I was going to create a different fashion magazine and break the constructs. They seemed to really like that idea plus how I wanted to include a retro vibe.
Talking within a group and sharing my ideas opened my eyes to how the idea I have is easy to understand. What I mean by that, is that people will understand my theme and the message I am trying to send with my elements, which I was worried about.
They also seemed to like my blog which is good because I wasnt sure how I felt about the whole layout, but they think it goes with what I am trying to create for my magazine.
So overall good feedback, so I can continue to create my magazine the way I want to! Xoxo.

And So It begins

Now that we have an idea of what I am going to create, its time to get started! The project is due April 14th, and all I have are drafts. First things first, I need to take pics before spring break, so that during spring break I can start working on the actual layout and creating the final product. So hopefully by early April, I can just focus on perfecting the product.
So my plan is to start shooting once I get back from California which is the 27th of March, photos shouldnt take that long since I have an idea of how I want then to come out. I will dedicate a whole day to taking photos so that they are perfect and I wont have to retake them.
Next I will work on the layout and writing the two-page spread for the rest of spring break, which would be about 4-5 days. Then from there I can work on perfecting the product until it is time to turn it in on April 14th!
I’m super stoked to get started on this journey and see how I can turn something of the mind into a reality.

Mood Board

Hey there amigos! So today I wanted to think about my two page spread. As said in my blog post concerning my front cover, I mentioned Isabella Michelini being the focus. Since she wants to be a fashion designer, I thought it would be cool to write an article about her and where she grabs inspiration for her designs.
To go along with my two page spread, and well pretty much the whole magazine, I need to think of what type of images I want as well as the overall mood. As I talked about in one of my blog posts, I am creating an unconventional fashion magazine and it is going to have an early 2000s vibe as well as some effect of vintage pop-art.
For the images I wanted to create a mood board, so that I will have an idea of what it is I want to create.

So that's my mood board! Lots of pink and bubblegum vibes but along with some cool pop-art effects, I can create something epic.

Table of Contents

Alright so now that I have an idea for my front cover, next are the table of contents. A magazine is usally 100+ pages therefore my table of contents needs to convey that I am creating a magazine of 100 pages or more.
I’m not sure how I want to make the table of contents, here are some examples of top fashion magazine table of contents page:
This is a table of contents from Popular magazine, I like that it has one main image and the table of contents are surrounding it. This is more of a simple take.

In this image, as we can see is from Vogue magazine, takes use of a lot of different images paired with all the pages. This is more of a crazy vibe to it which would work for my overall theme of being different.

I haven't really decided exactly what I would like to do yet, but I am leaning towards the image from Vogue. I like all the different images and it gives off that vintage vibe which is what I want to do.

Laying Out The Front Cover

Hello welcome back! This week I have started to draft some ideas for my front cover, keeping in mind my idea to create something different.

As we can see, by my award winning drawing , I am sticking to that idea of vintage pop art/ comic vibe as I previously talked about previously in one of my posts. Since I am creating something different and going against the constructs of a fashion magazine, I don’t think I am going to include cover lines.

For the front cover font, I want the font to be different and include little icons, to further convey my theme and message of the whole magazine, being that it is daring and going against fashion magazine constructs. As seen in the image above I want each letter to have a different icon or design pertaining to its letter. For example " B" has a little bee on it, punny.

Since the cover of a fashion magazine usually pertains to the main two page spread of the magazine, I wanted to do the same. For my model I was thinking of asking my friend Isabella Michelini, for she has colored hair and wants to be a fashion designer, therefore she will be the focus of the two page spread.

Front Cover Planning

I'm so excited! Now that I have figured out my theme and title, I can get started on the good stuff which is actually planning out the layout of my magazine.

As previously talked about in my last post, I want to break the conventions of a fashion magazine, so when deciding my front cover I need to keep that in mind. Fashion magazines usually place a popular model or celebrity on the front cover, dress them in bold and body hugging clothes, and the subject is always looking directly at the camera. The masthead is very large and placed at the top middle of the cover, and is made to stand out. The subtitles are placed along the subject and usually use a different font color so that it also stands out. Here are some examples of a conventional fashion magazine cover:

But I also some fashion magazines change the conventional front cover and still have it stand out. For example Love magazine and again the Messy heads, are magazine publications that I am going to be grabbing my ideas from. Here are some examples of their front covers:

As we can see from the Love magazine, not all of the subjects face the camera or are dressed in sensual clothing, in fact the shot is a head shot which allows viewers to have more focus on the subject rather than the clothing. As well as the masthead font is different on each issue. They also don't have any subtitles along the side of the subject, which in my opinion makes it more likely for someone to pick the magazine and actually have to open it to see what is inside. Not to mention that Love magazine is a well known fashion magazine, but as we can see they break the general conventions much like I want to do.

Saying this, I know I want my cover to have the subject be in the frame of a head shot and I want the masthead to be a different and fun font, as for the subtitles I have yet to decide if I want to include them on the cover. Since my magazine is 'Daring' and I want to convey that through every aspect, and I have to figure out the best way to do that.

Getting Started

First step on choosing genre, done. Next I need to figure out the overall theme for my first publication as well as a name for my magazine.

Fashion magazines have distinct characteristics , and follow the conventions of the content being visual based rather than what is being said. For example, Vogue magazines as you can see from the website have their photos as the main focus and everything else is somewhat blank. Though I am going to create a fashion magazine, I know that I want to create something rather different than what in general fashion magazines convey. I want my photos to stand out as much as the words do.

I'm grabbing a lot of inspiration from the Messy Heads magazine/website, from the website one can see how they take a different perspective on a magazine, not really following a certain genre but creating their own through whatever they write. I would like to do the same, in creating my own genre of sorts but through fashion. Saying that, I want my overall theme to be somewhat old fashioned or vintage. Here are some images that I am grabbing inspiration from:

Now for the name of my magazine, I have been thinking for a while I want it to represent my whole theme and vibe of the magazine. And being that this magazine is going to defy or challenge the conventions of a fashion magazine as well as be an empowering magazine for any gender, I have decided on the name ' Daring '. Dare means to defy or challenge something or someone, so I thought it was fitting for what I want to convey through my magazine.

Choosing the Right Path

In the world of magazine genres, ranging from fashion to games, I wonder which type of magazine I want to create. I'm stuck between creating a lifestyle magazine or a fashion magazine.

A fashion magazine is a magazine devoted to fashion, especially focusing on the latest trends and keeping readers up to date in the world of fashion. For example magazines like " Vogue" and " Elle", focus on all things fashion and are well known for their accurate information on trends.

A lifestyle magazine is a magazine that has a little more freedom and can concern topics ranging from travel tips to organizing your social life. For example magazines " Life & Style " and " Desert Magazine" focus on things like celebrity gossip or overall culture.

As I ponder over my two choices, I think what it is I am passionate about and in which form will it be best for me to exert that passion. Though through a lifestyle magazine I may have more freedom with what I choose to write about, I feel that my passion is in fashion. Fashion magazines also revolve around the culture of fashion, which is what I want to write about and focus on in my magazine.

So it is final, I will create a fashion magazine. Next step is how I am going to make this fashion magazine, the best one yet.
